SEASON 2005

The home venue for the Gridironwest 2005 season has been confirmed as the Superturf Hockey Ground Claremont (behind Challenge stadium-McGillivray rd). This is a great move by the league and this venue will make for a great game day atmosphere. One important thing for players to note is that the field is strictly for RUBBER SOLE SHOES ONLY, no exceptions.$3 entry, cheaper for concession and children but not sure what.
See below for fixtures for 2005 season and results

1-Oct-05

Juniors 1pm - broncos V JETS - Lost due to forfeit

Seniors 2pm steelers V JETS - Lost 41-16

Low player numbers didn't stop the team getting a good start, with the Jets leading 18-16 towards the end of the half. The joy of this lead was to be short lived however after a couple of soft cock squeelers combined to put a blatant cheap shot late hit on the Jets QB, so late in fact that the offending squeelers were give 30 yards in penalties 15 for the late hit and 15 for unsportsmanlike conduct, however the damage was done with Boxy's wrist being broken. This combined with the low numbers allowed the squeelers to come home in the second half, still bitching and winging all the way as they do.
Good signs however with replacement QB and Jets newcomer Rob Bense settling in nicely towards the end of the game so we should have some good things to come in the following weeks.
Looking for numbers at training if the big green bus is to get going.

Juniors Bye

Seniors 2pm JETS V giants - Lost 30-33

Whilst the loss is disappointing good signs for the Jets offence with Rob having a great game at QB both passing and running well. Hulk put on some great runs to spread the giants D and Sunshine made some trade mark extra yards with a couple of players hanging off him after taking strong overhead receptions to complete a great offensive performance.
D had some good stands however gave up to many yards on the ground, which resulted in to many points for the Jets to take the win. Goods signs of what the team can do we just need to bring it together for a full game.

15-Oct-05

JUNIORS 12pm JETS V vipers - Draw

SENIORS 2pm JETS V broncos Won 32-13

It was a more balanced O coming into it's own and allowing us to attack D's from all over the park. Key contribution's from IRON MAN Bruiser (O Tackle replaced Baz), Ironmen Webber and Prescott not far behind. Fraser ‘the frase that pays” Clarke got straight into the action with a score in his first week and several key catch's & runs. Angus got going this week with a couple of catches and looked fast and clean downfield.

D welcomed back Bish with a starring performance after several years out and blooded several new guys on D. Bunny, Tony, Dylan, Barry who all showed a lot of promise. D did a great job of bending but not breaking and was unlucky to give up a late score in the second quarter in the 57th minute !!! D shut them out in the 2nd half and it was pleasing to see the 2 int's (Col & TL Dave with a couple of circus catches) taken and the opportunity to get a couple more just go begging. The DB's (Daz in particular) and even LB's demonstrated much better technique and were tough to get behind. Tony also made 2 big plays in a row to take down the broncos running back.

Jets received football and strung together a drive with Juice taking it in from 4 yards out. Running the new plays with the old we ran the ball well Joey getting into his rhythm on Power. Extra point conversion was good.

The Broncos then took over, but on there first play were intercepted with a great low down play made by Donga.

Once again the O took over but seemed to become a little complacent early on in the game and even though we drove the ball OK handed it back to the Broncos with no addition to the score.

O scored twice more before the half. Rob broke several tackles on a great run down the right sideline then passed to buy lenty of yards on 3rd down. Heading into the half the Jets led 20 - 13 but were becoming a little frayed. Coach Box needed to address this and pleaded with the players to stay focused and to continue to whip them on the park not with there mouths. To the teams credit they re-focused got back on track and let their football do the talking.

O continued to roll in the second half. Rory ran hard all day and scored twice in the second half with Fraser Clarke getting rewarded for an invaluable contribution from the 60 position with a score in the fourth.

22-Oct-05

JUNIORS 12pm steelers V JETS - Draw

SENIORS 7pm vipers V JETS Lost 12-6

29-Oct-05

JUNIORS 1pm vipers V JETS - Draw 3-3

Played a much bigger and stronger side and was unlucky not to come away with a win again! First gamer Adien stepped up and played well on debut while Andrew H had another big game on both O and D. Marty threw one pick and made the poor sucker that caught it pay by running him down on our 2 and taking his head off!
Will be strengthened by the return of ABL, Cory played awesome and gets player of the week this week.

SENIORS 2pm JETS V saints - Win 22-6

Jets elected to take the ball, ran a few times and finished in the endzone. Perfect first drive.
L Webber kicked off without falling over and all were happy.
D forced 3 and punt, which went all of 30m and was stopped. O took over and an unfortunate intercept on a broken play put D back on pretty quickly.

Over the course of the game O had no problems running the ball and buying time for Rob in the pocket, the O-Line pushed saints around and made big holes all day.
D stepped up another notch shutting out for the first half and giving up one unlucky score in the second. O were slightly slower in the 2nd, running the ball more and going over some big plays.

Unfortunate injuries to Hendo at TE and Beno at DE may leave some gaps to fill in the next few weeks.

5-Nov-05

JUNIORS 12pm broncos V JETS Lost 0-2

With only 4 players, the juniors went down 0-2 which considering the opposition have a full 7 players was a pretty good effort. The lack of player commitment (ie. guys not turning up) in the Juniors is also reflected in the seniors, refer comments below.

SENIORS 7pm giants V JETS Lost 40-20

With a fresh round of injuries from the week before, a depleted jets took a giants outfit that was pumped up after they took a shellacking from the squeelers the previous week. Highlights of the first half were; *Dave ‘Vino’ Louw arriving late at the game after having consumed a vast quantity of the red liquid, and telling everyone around him that he was going to kill those F@#$%^G giants, and to watch his game to see if he was doing anything wrong, and he may need replacing in the first quarter to have a little vomit. *Greg Mellor, formerly known as Strapper and now to be known as Christmas tree after he got lit up like one on a scrambled play by the giants. *The power running from Fraser Clarke and Guy Wuillemin. Fraser is almost taking over the Mister Consistency tag from Ben ‘Juice’ Prescott, its neck and neck at the moment. *The power tackling from Laurie ‘Princess’ Webber, who smashed anyone in a blue jersey who came near him. *The step up to make an impact on the game by first year players Jason “The couch” Kochilougivocoi???, and Ben (dont know his last name). After a half time rev up, the Jets came out a bit more switched on in the second half but it was a case of too little too late. A poor umpiring display did not help matt e r s . We can find any number of excuses, but the bottom line is that we have too many players who think they are better than they actually are who should be at training to learn some Jet histroy and how to play the game. Final score 20-40. SCORERS - Fraser Clarke, Guy Weilliumen, WR Angus 1 TD each, Laurie Webber 2PAT.

12-Nov-05

JUNIORS Bye
SENIORS 4.30pm JETS V steelers Lost 0-28

With only 16 players turned up before the game, we seriously came close to forfeiting this game and it was only 5 minutes before the start of the game that the coaches put it to the players whether they play or not. The players chose to play. Those guys that put there hand up to play are a credit to themselves, the club and the history of the Jets. With a few players returning from injury next week maybe we have turned a corner Not all was doom and gloom, the highlights of the game for me were; *Bruiser returning a kick-off return, he made 15-yards and it took 5 squeelers to bring him down. *Power running by Fraser Clarke. *Daz catching a pass on offense. *The debut games by Justin, Scotty and Mark (with Scotty and Mark being the first father/son combination to play for the Jets and probably the league). *Practically all guys playing both ways and special teams. The game was called near the end of the third quarter when we had 3 players go down in only 2 plays. What we do now as a club depends upon us. The time for talk is over and now we need everyone associated with the club to start stepping up. Final score 0-28. SCORERS - Nil, nada, doughnut.

19-Nov-05

JUNIORS 1pm JETS V vipers Lost

SENIORS 7pm broncos V JETS Lost 26-28

A good hard game with extra points being the differnce in the end. O played well with Rob doing a good job at QB but yet again D let in too many points for the team to come away with the win.

SENIORS 7pm JETS V vipers Friday Night Game Lost Lots to not much

26-Nov-05

JUNIORS 1pm steelers V JETS Lost

3-Dec-05

JUNIORS 12pm vipers V JETS Lost

SENIORS 7pm saints V JETS Lost lots to not much

In a must win game to make the finals the saints were just too good. They only had a couple of key players that fired but that was enought to run over a lack luster Jets. A fitting way to end a pretty crap season

Season 2005 Summary

What start out as looking to be a great year for the Jets with the best influx of quality rookies that the clubs seen in many a year plus the return of a number of veterans all went pear shaped with a lack of commitment to both training and game days. The team wasn't helped by a higher than usual number of injuries through out the season but in the end lack of good quality training session to enable people to step up and cover and give the rookies the opportunity to really learn the game was what cost us.
All in all a very disappointing season capped of by it being the first time in 14 season that we haven't made the finals.
With the season finally over we can look forward to the O v's D cricket game which should be on sometime in the new year and from there try and build some momentum to get the club going in the right direction for season 2006
