Mid season wrap.

After a good start to the season, only going down to the Broncos by 1 point, the team lost it's way and struggled to put points on the board and hold out other teams.

The low light came with a 76- 0 drubbing by the Vipers but ironically this game appears to have been the catalyst for the team's turnaround. With a number of players missing some experimentation on O had some positive signs and has worked well with the team winning the last two games before the mid season break. Round 11 against the struggling fire saw the team start to put a few things together and come away with an 84-0 win and this was followed up by a 42-38 win over a pumped up saints, who rolled the blitz the week before, with the winning TD coming in the last few seconds.

This all bodes well for things after the break with training back underway on Tuesday the 5th of Jan.

Round 3

Jets v's blitz b - Won 24-8 - Some good pressure from D made life hard for the blitz's QB all day, with the only score coming from a flea flicker. O made some good plays to get some much needed points on the board.

Juniors managed there first score going down bravely 16 - 6 to the squealers.

This week sees the team take on the saints down at South Perth m 4pm kick off and the juniors take on the wolverines at 2pm

Round 1

Seniors v's Broncos Lost 37-36 - The disappointment of losing aside it was good result against last yeas big improvers the Broncos The game was there for the winning with the Jets having a shot at a field goal in the closing stages of the game however unfortunately it failed to pass between the uprights. It was great to see O being able to put up a winning number of points on the board. With D having a large number of rookies in it's ranks there's plenty of room for things to improve over the season putting the club in a good position when it gets to the business end of the season.

Juniors v's vipers lost 30+ - 0. A hard day at the office for our mainly rookie junior team. They started the day with only the 9 and end with 8 whilst the vipers had plenty of bodies on the sideline and it took it's toll late in the game. As with the seniors D the number of rookies means things should improve dramatically through the season provided everyone puts in the work at training.

This weekend sees the juniors have a bye while the seniors take on the Vipers in the 1.30 game at North Beach Rugby Club, Charles Riley Memorial Oval North Beach.

Season 2009/2010

Disneywest has finally announced the playing fields for this year, or at least for round 1, and it is North Beach Rugby Club, which is at Charles Riley Memorial Oval, North Beach.

We've been advised that the easiest way to get there is Freeway North to Reid Hwy - turn left, then keep going towards the ocean and turn left at the sign that says Nth Beach Rugby club. Best to use the southern most entrance into the carpark off Kitchener or else you will need to traverse a maze of car parks.

Week 1, Saturday 03/10/2009, fixtures are 12:00 Field 1 Vipers J vs Jets J 1:30 Field 1 Vipers vs Blitz 1 1:30 Field 2 Squealers J vs Broncos J 3:30 Field 2 Squealers2 vs Fire 4:30 Field 1 Jets vs Broncos 7:00 Field 1 Squealers1 vs Saints

The Rest will be posted when they come to hand.

Season 2008/2009 is done and dusted and while the team failed to have any major success this year we can celebrate some great performances by Jets players in the North v's South game held at carnage park on Saturday 21/02. In a very defensive game Rory lead the North team on the ground scoring the only TD for the game and taking the lions share of the carries and Ryan lead the receiving stats both in yards and number of catches. Marty also flew the flag proudly at QB completing more passes than the fellow northern QB whilst not throwing a single intercept.

Sights are now set on the 2009/2010 season with the emphasis put on good quality training sessions every week by all players and coaches to ensure we start to get those results on the field that have been missing for a number of seasons. The committee has some strategies that are being put in place to ensure this so it's up to players current and past to get down and support the club and to see it get back to where it belongs as the club to beat in WA Gridiron.

Pre-season will get underway in early August so for interested players check back late July for full details or send us an e-mail to jetsgc@gmail.com and we'll add you to our notification list to be e-mailed the details when they come to hand.

The Jets season for 2007/2008.

All games this season will be played at Ashfield Reserve on grass so I hope no one bought new turf boots for the season.

06-Oct-07 - 2pm - broncos V JETS.Won 38-6
We lost the toss and saw the broncos have first use of the ball. A couple of first game jitters gave them a few more yards than we should have and allowed them to score but that was it for the game. The conversion was denied and D amassed 5 turn overs, 2 picks and 4 fumble recovers to totally dominate the broncos O for the game

Our first score came on a running play for Jets first gamer Matt early on in game and was converted by another new Jet in the backfield big Wade, again on the ground, which pretty much set the tone for offence for the game

Not to be out done by the new boys in the back field Rory ran in a nice 6 points off buck, this time the conversion was missed.

Leading into half time a strong run up the guts by Wade, with Joey the fish doing his best to keep up and block after a day full a sweeps and playing both ways, gave us another 6 and Gus picked up the 2 points with a nice pass from Marty. Jets 22 - 6
The sweep was the order of the day for the first half and got us plenty of yards however it was starting to taking a toll on the fish who went to the half asking Marty for a bit of relief in the second half and maybe go to the air.

The second half started with Marty showing his respect for Joey’s commitment to the team and running a sweep on the first play. The fish sucked it in and got on with the job as always and we continued to get good yards resulting in another TD to Matt who then backed up and got his own 2 points.

The game was finished off with Rory picking up his second TD and Matty the 2 for the conversion, giving him the top scoring honours for the game with 16 points on his first outing as a Jet, nice work champ.

A great way to kick the season off and the boys are fired up to keep the momentum going this weekend against the saints this 2pm Ashfield Oval.
________________________________________________________________________________

13-Oct-07 - 2pm - JETS V saints - Won 66-0

A great game all round. Rory and Matt ran all over them scoring 36 point between them and this gave Marty the confidence start going to the air and it paid dividends. A pair of passing TD’s to rookie Ryan and Gus plus a few extra point conversions really keep the saints D on the back foot.

Mean while our D piled on the pressure to shut down the run totally. All Mick's work with the boys in pre-season on tacking is really starting to pay off. Camo, Ash and Bunny had a great game back in the secondary with some good coverage playing in the 4-4-3 formation for the first time and was topped off with a great pick by Camo. D also had their first score for the season through a great piece of work with a fumble recovery from Pogo1.

Add to this a return score on special teams by Daz and it was a fantastic win, however all the boys are well aware that we’ve played the bottom 2 side from last season so while it’s a great start we need to keep working hard with the squeelers coming up this week, 7pm game at Ashfield.

________________________________________________________________________________

20-Oct-07 - 7pm - JETS V squeelers. Lost - 12-34

A hesitant D started out the game OK holding the squeelers scoreless in the first quater. This hesitation however resulted in a lack of pressure at the point of attack play and started to cost with a couple of soft TD's let through on sweeps in the second. This set the mode for the night with D having some good holds then blowing it on plays here and there allowing 44 points to be scored for the night.

Canadian Matt showed his normal hard nose football with a couple of TD runs going straight through a number of the squeelers D. These however were the only highlights on an O that failed to fire.

It was always looked at as a bench mark game and it's shown that we still have a lot of work to do if we really want to challenge for the flag this year. It came down to lack of consistency across the field, which can easily be worked out at training providing we get everyone down and going in the same direction.

The loss has left us in second spot on percentage ahead of the vipers who we take on this weekend at 4.30pm at Ashfield Reserve, for a game that will see the winner take second spot outright.
________________________________________________________________________________

27-Oct-07 - 4.30pm - JETS V vipers, Lost 14-36

This was always going to be a hard game for O with Rory stepping up for his first stint at QB but in the end it was D that let the game slip away.

D was caught out a number of times on the deep pass after and on the run their blockers just got too far down field and just cost too many yards.

O got stronger as the game went on and Rory settle in more. As expected running was the order of the day but he let off a couple of passes with mixed success. One os the best thought came from a nice run to the right shedding a couple of tacklers and making a nice pass for a first down and a big lift for O. All in all he did a great job for his first hit out.

Matt again made some great runs, one of which knocked 21 of the vipers into lala land when he tackled him. To his credit, whilst probably not the smartest move, once he got his head back together and took of the wobbly boots he came back on and kept running the ball for the vipers. Matt also took a nice pass and ran it in for a TD. New running back Rick put in some good yards and was paid off with his first TD for the club.

The loss sees the team slip to 3rd on the ladder we head into the last game of the round against the so far very inconsistence blitz at 7pm, Ashfield .
________________________________________________________________________________

03-Nov-07 - 7pm - blitz V JETS, Lost 24-16

The game started well with two scores in the first half and D only letting one through. Angus ran in the first off a pass with Canadian Matt picking up the 2 in the first quarter. Then in the second quarter playing his first game for the Jets after arriving from the UK on Thursday and still making training that afternoon, gotta love that commitment, Coventry Jets running back Lawrence Grugeon ran one in with Matt again busting in for the 2 sending us to the half with an 8 point lead.

We held onto the lead for most of the 3rd quarter and after what should have been a morale boosting turn over from D some undisciplined play cost us 15 yards and had O starting back deep in our half. After a couple of runs didn't get many yards a rushed pass trying to get the first was picked off and the blitz went on to score to level the score.

The 4th quarter saw the stalemate continue up to the last minute of the game when D failed to hold and the games winning TD was scored.

A very disappointing way to end the first round of games, which started out so positively with 2 wins, but we now sit in 4th with a record of 2-3. Next week sees us back up against the broncos who we dismissed to the tune of 66-0 in the first game, however last week they managed to roll the blitz 44-12 so next weeks game is really up for grabs. Kick off is 4.30 down at Ashfield .

So plenty of work on both sides of the ball to be done down at training this week and the key as always will be getting numbers down so we can have a good hit out. If the last three losses aren't enough to get boys down and fired up we could be in for another unproductive season.
________________________________________________________________________________

10-Nov-07 - 4.30pm - JETS V broncos, Draw 22 all

After winning the toss and deferring it the broncos took the ball and made us pay by returning the opening kick off for a touch down.

Things settled from there with LG running in two TD's for the game and Rory passing one to Ryan. Unfortunately a rushed pass was intercepted and returned for a TD and a score against D had the scores all level.

After having to punt late in the 4th D went on and some great coverage shut down the deep passing game allowing only short yard gains to put the broncos in a 4th and long with only seconds left. The last play of the game saw Jnr deck the broncos QB with a great hit which had the QB's helmet fly off and roll out of bounds and the ball spill out for a fumble. Jnr however decided celebrating his sack and big hit to the side line had priority over picking up the ball and running it in for the game winning TD, but it was a sweet hit, and the game ended at 22 all

Disappointing to end it with a draw but on the up side D didn't give up a big blow out play all game and with a stand in QB in Rory and Canadian Matt not being available for O to still score 3 times there's more good things than bad to take away from the game.

Next week sees the team taking on the last placed saints, 4.30 at Ashfield, which is the perfect time for the team to work out the kinks and really hit it's straps, play some good solid football and get the confidence up for the rest of the season.
________________________________________________________________________________
17-Nov-07 - 4.30pm - saints V JETS Won 62- 8

Whilst it was a win on the score board the game was a huge loss for the Jets with two of our offensive guns leaving the game in the back of ambulances.

Running back #22 Lawrence Grugeon , who is in the second week of his holiday over here from the UK and playing in his third game for the club, suffered a broken ankle late in the game while running the ball.

Then Wide Receiver # 88 Angus Adams, after taking a pass and gaining some huge yards after the catch, landed awkwardly during the tackle and dislocated his hip. It was successfully put back in later at hospital. No word yet on his long term prognosis for either of the boys.

Our best wishes go out to both of them for a full recovery.

As for the game itself self it was great to have ex QB Boxhead fill in for Marty and by all account he did a great job. Matt had yet another great game with 5 TD's to his name, 2 from passes and 3 on the ground. D also held well allowing just the 1 TD.

Whist this win should have put the team into out right third a ridiculous decision by disney west to suspend the vipers QB for one week saw the broncos win over the vipers and sees the Jets sitting in 4.

What started as a disney west kangaroo court to punish a blatant cheap shot by a soft cock squeeler ended with them caving to what the squeelers do best, squealing, and they then also looked at the retaliation by the vipers QB, which wasn't even flagged during the game. In a true claytons move they just gave them both a week in what we can only assume was an effort to shut the squeelers up.

All this aside we now head into round 8 having to face who else but the squeelers, who come off a loss to the blitz this week so hopefully the boys can come together and give it a red hot go. 2pm game down at Ashfield.
________________________________________________________________________________
24-Nov-07 - 2pm - squeelers V JETS Lost 26-12
________________________________________________________________________________
01-Dec-07 - 7pm - vipers V JETS lost forfeit
________________________________________________________________________________
08-Dec-07 - 2pm - JETS V blitz lost 34-12
Week 10 saw the Jets take on the Blitz in what turned out to be Canadian Matt’s last game for the club. Whist he lead from the front as usual with a couple of TD’s and a truck load of yards the team came up short and lost 34-12.

In his standard low key fashion Matt didn’t advised the boys till after the game that he was going back home in a couple of days so no formal send off was arrange but on behalf of the Jets Matt you where a great bloke to have on the team a absolute model player on the filed. No carrying on, no bullshit just got out there and got the job done, we’re sorry to see you go and if you’re every back down this end of the world again make sure you get in touch.

________________________________________________________________________________
15-Dec-07 - 7pm - broncos V JETS Lost 24-26
Week 11 match us up against the Broncos and saw us go down by 2 lousy point. Marty was back at QB and Rory relished being back running the ball with 2 TD’s and so nice bag of yards for the team. Daz scored the other TD on the ground with a great 34 yard run but it just wasn’t enough to get the win.
________________________________________________________________________________
22-Dec-07 - 7pm - JETS V saints Lost 14-12
Week 12 was against the Saints. Matt Herring scored our first passing TD for a while and Rory ran one in, but failure to convert either of the two pointer saw the game slip away to the saints 14-12
________________________________________________________________________________
05-Jan-08 - 4.30pm - squeelers V JETS Lost Forfeit
________________________________________________________________________________
12-Jan-08 - 2pm - JETS V vipers Lost 38-14
Unfortunately the only stat that the Jets are leading in this season tick up again by one, being players ending up in hospital, with Matt Herring ending the day in RPH with fractured lumbar vertebrae. I'm sure he would appreciate visitors so if you in town drop by and say hi.

The game itself showed both teams dragging what's left of their players to the end of the season. We had some good plays, Rory ran in a TD while Marty made a nice pass to Adrian which Roy converted. D managed not to give up any big plays but were just worn down a few yards at a time to let in too many scores to come away with the with.

Our final game of the season is against the blitz, 4.30 kick off, so we look forward to seeing everyone down.

________________________________________________________________________________
19-Jan-08 - 4.30pm - blitz V JETS lost 6-22
A good game to finish the season on with all the boys having fun out on the field. D had a few more flags than normal but they were all worth the loss of yards. O mad some good solid yards but failed to convert every time. Daz ran in a TD however was hit in the endzone, fumbled the ball and the ref’s called it no TD in error with the blitz recovering the ball. Rory got some good yards running and Marty & Ryan combined well for some yards in the air.

Good news is all the Jets walking wounded are up and around in one way or another and were down helping out or supporting the team, excluding Lawrence who is back in the UK but it’s still going to score him some pillow votes, so all the best to those boys for the off season recovery time.

It was then back to Carnage park to clear out the fridge. The vets would have been proud of the new crop with a couple of rookies being at the wrong end of the drinking games.

Trophy night is coming up and details will be posted as soon as they come to hand.

Season 2006/2007 results below

The home venue for the Gridironwest 2006/2007 will again be the Superturf Hockey Ground Claremont (behind Challenge stadium-McGillivray rd). Remeber that this field is strictly for RUBBER SOLE SHOES ONLY, no exceptions.

2006/2007 Fixtures

Round 1 - 7-Oct-06

Venue - Superturf Hockey Stadium(click for map)

Juniors - TBA - forfeit

Due to disneywest still not having any fixtures posted the day before the game juniors were advised that there would be no game on the weekend. Unfortunately disneywest felt that posting TBA v's TBA at 11.30am and TBA v's TBA at 12.45pm constituted fixtures. Bad way to start the season but plenty of games to pick it back up.

Seniors - 4.30pm saints v's Jets - Lost 8-6

No frills first hit out. Good numbers compared to last season however failure to get everyone down to training again cost the team on game day. Lots of work to do but plenty of time with a long season ahead.

Venue - Superturf Hockey Stadium(click for map)

Juniors - 12.45pm Steelers v's Jets - lost - forfeit

-

Seniors - 7pm Jets V blitz lost - 20-0

A mouthy but unfortunately also well-drilled blitz just kept hitting away and got some scores. This blitz team rival the squeelers for whining about calls that have no impact on the game.
O failed to fire as shown by the score line.

With the vipers getting some of their veterans back on board they were just too much for this new Jets team that are still trying to find their feet. Best wishes for speedy recovery to Rob who was taken to hospital in the second half after being injured during the game, hope all goes well.
Still a long season ahead so plenty to play for in the coming weeks.

Due to the number of juniors unable to play as a result of exams the club has unfortunately been forced to withdraw the junior side for this season.

Seniors - 2pm Jets v saints lost 28-12

Match report this week sullpied by our stats man Leo Lerich

In spite of the loss, I thought that the team looked very good for the first time this year. The passing game really came alive for the first time and looked very impressive. In fact, the Jets outplayed the Saints and would have easily won the game but for handling errors which can be corrected with practice.

Round 13- 20-Jan-07

Venue - Superturf Hockey Stadium(click for map)

Seniors - 7pm Jets v vipers Lost 20-8

It may have been a loss for the team but in a way it was a win for a pumped up D. They only had one true score against them and managed to score one for themselves which was then converted, to give a net result of Jets' D 8 vipers O 6. The other points came from an intercept by the vipers and an inadvertent whistle prior to a turn over by some clown who shall rename nameless.
The secondary really stepped up and shut down the vipers passing game, and with a pumped up Jnr back in the side making his presence felt things looked good. The only blight was missed tackles, of which there were a truck load. If they had been made it would have denied the vipers all their scoring opportunities bar the intercept.

O was very hit and miss, some good runs, a couple of good passes and catches, but all in all lack of training killed O again, as with the missed tackles on D

How players think the team can win games with only 5 people turning up to training is beyond everyone. Whilst this season is pretty much dead and buried, with the Booge man's 200th game on 10/02 against the bronocs the only thing to look forward too, there needs to be some serious changes of attitudes at the club. If not we are set to stay as a second tier club fighting it out with the broncos & sainst to get thrashed in the first round of finals by the top side, rather than the force in Gridiron in this state that the club has been.

Round 14- 3-Feb-07

Venue - Ashfield Reserve(click for map)

Seniors -4.30pm Jets v squeelers - Lost 14-0

was asked if the boys wanted to play this game the easy way or the right way, and to a player the later was selected and shown on the field.

D came out firing and held the squeelers scoreless in the first half. Good tackling, a couple of sacks and a forced turn over all help D get a number of 4 and out series and enable them to get the ball back in our O's hands. Daz lead from the front but Kotch was the stand out tackler for D getting both sacks and numerous other tackles. O had some good plays highlighted by some great runs from Tom and Rory but were also held scoreless.

D faltered on a couple of plays early in the 3rd , a reverse and a long pass, both of which resulted in scores. They regained composure and stopped any further scores however O never managed to trouble the scorers and the game ended with the loss.

Again good signs which hopefully can be built on but only if we get numbers to training. After good showings against the top two sides in the comp over the last two weeks the team looks set to get it's first win for the season against the broncos. A lot depends however on making these last couple of trainings count and giving O the chance to get it's game plan together and practiced before they step on the ground. It would be a shame to let this chance slip and not give Boogie a win on his 200th game.

Round 15- 10-Feb-07

Seniors - 4.30pm broncos v Jets - Won 20-12 click here for gameday photos

With a good turn out to see Booge play his 200th game the team was keen to take it right up to the broncos and get their first win of the season. A couple of early turn overs by O put pressure on D deep in their half and lack of pre game planing both at training and on game day cost us with a very disjointed unit letting the broncos score on both occasions. The only consolation being that we lifted enough to stop the conversion each time.

Things then improved dramatically with O holding onto the ball and getting some yards and D starting to stop the broncocs drives. The second half started with the team still 12 points behind but the confidence that this could be overhauled by the end of the game.

O scored twice in the 3rd through some great work from the O line and running to match by Rory. One of these was then converted thanks to some nice running by Tom to give the team a 2 point lead. The broncos then came back with a missed tackle by some clown letting them get inside the 10 yard line and what looked to be a certain TD however a great hit from rookie d-back pogo2 caused the fumble which was recovered by Daz to give the ball back to O.

O then took charge and ran in another TD with Rory again crossing the line to give a nice 8 point buffer. D held to give the ball back to O and resulted in a nice pass from Marty to Pogo1 who had a great run to get all the way down to the offensive 5-yard line but unfortunately lost control of the ball turning it back over

Long passes were then required for the broncos to have a chance to tie the game however an intercept and return deep in the Jets defensive half put paid to any such thoughts allowing O to come on , run out the clock and seal and the first win for the season.

A great way to end what was unfortunately another crap season. Hopefully a taste of a win will get the new boys back down next season and with an improved training ethic as this club has the talent to get back to the top of the ladder where it belongs. The stocks should also be bolstered by the inclusion of a running back from UK team the Coventry Jets, who will be out here for next season during the UK off-season and is keen to play. Check out their website to see how our UK counterparts go in their season this year.

The big fella has also indicated that he is planning on put in a big year next season and reclaim his spot at centre. It should be noted that this win was mainly due to the teams new found confidence which was in no small part due to the number of veterans helping out this new generation of Jets. Support was both on and off the field with the likes of Beno, Dodsy, Brownie and Gee, who suited up to be part of the big mans days, giving everything their old decrepit bodies had, which wasn't a great deal but it certainly helped fire up a few of the new boys. An even bigger number gave support on the side line. Lead by Boxy who took on the coaching role and helped out by the likes of Donga, Mellor, Elvis, Hally, Newton, Hendo, Beaumont, Bubalouie, Gav, Barra and Leo on the stats, apologies if I missed anyone, the team was able to draw confidence from this wealth of experience and thrived on the advice that was given. If all these boy's helped out just a few training and games per week for next season we could avoid that over commitment and burn out that has caused issues in the past from a coaching view point. So the call now goes out to these and other past players to get down and help out in coaching/support roles. What better way to catch up with your mates than by telling a bunch of young blokes how well we did it when we were playing in the club house after training. A new generation to punish with stories of 4 GF's in a row, rookie games, overtime/come from behind wins, water melon diving and trips to Bunbury and Rotto.

Having said this the new boys need to hold up their end of the deal and commit to training and playing every week and every training, not just when they feel like it, and letting the boys that don't do this know that it's not good enough, and then the Jets can get back to where they belong as being the team to beat and a team that can take anyone in disneywest on their day.
